Digital transformation is introducing a growing number of connected devices that generate and consume a large variety of services from\u00a0the Internet.<\/span><\/b> To reduce latency and data traffic, these services are being shifted from large data centers to peripheral servers in what is\u00a0<\/span>known as Multi-Access Edge Computing (<\/span>MEC<\/b><\/span>). This shift opens key use cases for future networks, such as healthcare, agriculture,\u00a0<\/span>logistics, etc. Whereas this ambition is in the spotlight of larger urban areas, the <\/span>slow deployment of 5G in sparsely populated areas<\/b><\/span> is\u00a0<\/span>hindering the ability to bring MEC applications to these locations, which negatively impacts the development of industry and social\u00a0<\/span>development.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

A solution that mixes multiple Radio Access Networks<\/b> (RANs), including Wi-Fi, would bring MEC capabilities to areas where high-speed\u00a0connection (e.g., 5G) does not exist. The O-RAN architecture has set the first step to bring edge and cloud components to Wi-Fi networks,\u00a0<\/span>enabling access to MEC resources through this consolidated technology, and embracing <\/span>Artificial Intelligence<\/b><\/span> (AI) to serve management\u00a0<\/span>purposes, such as radio configuration. In scenarios with limited or fluctuating network resources, adapting MEC configuration to the\u00a0<\/span>network status becomes key. This is especially true for delay sensitive services such as video, which is present in many MEC applications,\u00a0<\/span>including e-health, droning and remote assistance. Consequently, predictive quality of service algorithms and adaptive streaming\u00a0<\/span>mechanisms are key enablers to improve the quality of experience and the use of network resources. Thus, it becomes important for these\u00a0<\/span>locations to have access to such edge services, not only through 5G, but also via hybrid solutions based on more reachable technologies,\u00a0<\/span>such as Wi-Fi.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These environments bring added challenges <\/b>as they involve distributed computational and network resources<\/b>, which are complex to\u00a0handle by human operators. Recent works argue the need of\u00a0<\/span>incorporating AI to optimally orchestrate such systems, anticipating changes and issues, and providing greater user satisfaction and\u00a0<\/span>performance, especially for <\/span>delay-sensitive applications<\/b><\/span>. Conversely, this <\/span>heterogeneity<\/b><\/span> and distribution of computing and network\u00a0<\/span>resources is expected to be part of <\/span>Beyond 5G networks<\/b><\/span>, which would have a greater level of resource geo-distribution, and advanced\u00a0<\/span>orchestration and management subsystems enabled by AI<\/b><\/span>. Therefore, exploring advanced monitoring systems that enable zero-touch<\/span><\/p>

management becomes of key importance to enable self-optimized, self-monitored and self-healing network operations.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Objective<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The global objective<\/u><\/b> of this project is to design a next-generation wireless network<\/b> solution empowered with MEC capabilities that is suitable for a mixture of programmable radio access technologies<\/b>, ensuring high performance and low-latency<\/b>, and that guarantees improved user experience in the consumption of delay-sensitive content<\/b> in heterogeneous environments via AI tools<\/b> and advanced zero-touch orchestration<\/b> systems. This solution aims to reduce <\/b>the existing digital gap<\/b> in remote areas and with limited coverage, especially increasing with the introduction of 5G, while providing<\/b> the most innovative networking use cases enabled by AI at the edge for improved efficiency in Beyond 5G networks<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t
